Have just got back from Edinburgh to be at the opening of Taking Time; Craft and The Slow Revolution which is showing at Innovative Crafts at The Dovecot for the next two months. A lovely time had and so interesting to see work shown in a different space. The relationship between the object and the space that is in and how they mediate and temper each other is part of what this series of works is about but after getting used to how they sat in the Waterhall at Birmingham it was fascinating to find them in their new home. As autonomous objects they seem to have been lent a greater sense of gravity by the new surroundings and the relationship of the group to each other is more interesting. Firstly the architecture at The Dovecot is very different, much more in keeping with what one thinks of as a gallery space. White walls, beautiful grey stone floor and grey steel ceiling beams. The ceiling is much lower, a fifth of the Birmingham one, much closer to a domestic experience of space, the other main difference is that is an essentially windowless space relying entirely on the relatively harsh ceiling track spotlights. But for me this worked very well, the higher contrast accentuated the bandsawn surfaces and picked out the threaded areas in a level of detail not seen so clearly in the softer light of the Waterhall. The Waterhall has a beautiful darkwood parquet floor but it was felt the work would sit a little more strongly on white panels, it worked in that space but it sat so much better on the stone in Edinburgh, something in the green-grey picking up in the oak. In all it was good to see the whole show working just as well, if not better, in a completely different environment both as individual artists’ works and as a coherent whole.
